Create a measurement brief before publication
Decide what the campaign should help you learn. A launch tutorial may aim to explain a complex product, while a comparison article may help shoppers choose a variation. Write the main outcome and supporting measures before content goes live. This reduces the temptation to choose whichever metric looks best afterward and helps the creator understand the purpose of the destination page.
Assign consistent names to the partner, campaign, and placement. Keep a record of each content URL, publication date, featured product, tracking destination, and agreed compensation. A partner with several placements should not become several unrelated identities in your spreadsheet. Separate any flat content fee from affiliate commission so you can evaluate the complete campaign cost later.
Use links and codes with a known attribution rule
A link can connect a referred visit to later activity within the tracking setup’s limits. A creator code provides a recognizable signal when a shopper enters it at checkout. Either signal can be incomplete: a visitor may change devices, and a code may circulate beyond the original audience. Treat these as observable attribution signals rather than perfect records of every influence on the purchase.
Test the exact integration behavior when more than one signal exists. If a shopper follows one partner’s link and enters another partner’s code, which partner receives commission? Check the documented rule and reproduce the scenario in a controlled test where appropriate. Also distinguish campaign parameters used in web analytics from the identifiers your affiliate system requires for order attribution.
Reconcile orders and interpret the result
Build the order review around a unique order reference. Add eligible revenue, returns, commission status, and the partner attribution, then check for duplicates. Use the same time range and explain whether the report groups by order date, approval date, or payment date. Comparing different date definitions can create an apparent mismatch even when both underlying reports are working as configured.
Use the result to ask better questions. Did customers reach the intended product? Was it in stock? Did a simultaneous store promotion affect conversion? Attributed revenue alone does not prove incremental revenue, because some buyers may already have intended to purchase. Afivio can organize partner performance and commission records; interpreting the business effect still requires your store context and careful comparisons.
Worked example · illustrative scenario
Example: two placements, one partner
A fictional audio-accessory brand records a creator’s tutorial and newsletter mention as separate placements under one partner. The report keeps publication dates and landing pages, then reconciles qualifying orders once by order reference. A customer who encountered both placements still represents one purchase, not two campaign conversions.
Frequently asked questions
Are UTM parameters enough to calculate affiliate commission?
Do not assume so. UTM parameters can label traffic for analytics, while your affiliate system may require its own identifier and order integration. Test the actual setup before using results for payouts.
Can influencer codes overstate direct influence?
Yes. Codes can be shared beyond the original content. Review code activity and placement context before interpreting all code-attributed orders as directly caused by a particular post.
Why do analytics and affiliate reports differ?
They may use different attribution rules, date definitions, consent behavior, and order statuses. Reconcile a sample of order references and compare definitions before assuming either report is wrong.
