Shopify affiliate link tracking and testing

A working affiliate link must do more than open a page. The customer should reach the right product, the tracking context should behave as configured, and a qualifying order should reach the correct partner record. Use a repeatable test to find where a problem begins.

Affiliate link test cases

Use this local checklist to review your plan. Checking an item does not change your Shopify store or Afivio account.

Understand the link, visit, and order as separate steps

The visible link is the entry point. It may include an identifier that associates the visit with a partner in your affiliate setup. The later order must also reach that setup with enough information for its attribution rule to apply. A page opening successfully proves navigation works; it does not by itself prove that an order will be attributed or commissioned correctly.

Review the actual destination URL and the integration instructions for your store. Do not guess parameter names or paste invented identifiers into a product URL. If you shorten a link or route it through another page, test the full path. Campaign labels used for your analytics can coexist with partner tracking, but they should not replace identifiers required by the affiliate system.

Run a small test matrix with expected outcomes

Write each test case before running it: partner, link, code if any, product, expected order eligibility, and expected commission. Use a dedicated test identity and keep the order reference. Start with the simplest qualifying purchase, then add one complication at a time. This makes it easier to locate a failure than changing the browser, product, code, and reward settings all at once.

Include the scenarios that matter to your store, such as a redirected landing page, an excluded product, a partial refund, or a link-and-code conflict. Cookie and attribution-window behavior depend on the configured system and browsing conditions. Do not promise unlimited tracking across devices or browsers. Record what you actually verified and what remains outside the tested customer journey.

Troubleshoot from the first missing event

If the destination is wrong, fix navigation first. If the visit appears but the order does not, inspect the order integration and eligibility before editing the link. If the order appears under the wrong partner, review the attribution rule and earlier tracking context in the test session. If attribution is right but the amount is wrong, inspect the commission basis and discounts.

Keep evidence concise: the partner identifier, test time, destination, order reference, expected outcome, and observed outcome. Share only necessary details with support. After a fix, repeat the failing case and one ordinary qualifying case to check the wider flow. Maintain a small regression checklist for future checkout, domain, discount, or integration changes rather than relying on a one-time launch test.

Worked example · illustrative scenario

Example: identifying the actual failure

A fictional apparel store sees a partner link open the right product but no commission after a test order. Its test record shows that the purchased item was outside the campaign’s intended eligibility. The team verifies the rule and updates the partner’s destination and brief, rather than changing a link that was already navigating correctly.

Frequently asked questions

Does a click guarantee a tracked order?

No. Order attribution depends on the integration, eligibility rules, attribution settings, and browsing conditions. Test the complete customer-to-order journey instead of checking navigation alone.

Should I test in my normal shopping session?

A clean, dedicated test session helps reduce interference from earlier partner visits or saved codes. Keep test identities and orders separate from genuine campaign reporting.

What information helps support investigate a tracking issue?

Provide the test time, partner, destination, order reference, expected attribution, and observed result. Avoid sending unnecessary customer personal information.
