Shopify affiliate fraud prevention and review

Reduce avoidable commission disputes by defining acceptable behavior before recruitment and reviewing unusual activity with evidence. A suspicious pattern deserves investigation, not an automatic accusation. Keep your response proportionate and document decisions so honest partners can understand the process.

Which signal needs attention?
How clear is the relevant program rule?

0 of 2 answered. Advice is based only on your selections.

Start with clear rules and limited access

Identify the behavior your offer is intended to reward. Then document restrictions relevant to your business, such as prohibited self-referrals, unapproved brand bidding, misleading claims, or unauthorized coupon distribution. Give partners examples of permitted activity as well as restrictions. A specific rule makes later review easier than a broad promise that the merchant can reject any traffic it dislikes.

Keep campaign administration and payout preparation within the appropriate team roles. Review changes to sensitive payout details through your established account process. Do not ask partners to send passwords or unnecessary identity information in an ordinary email exchange. The aim is a dependable operational process that reduces mistakes and misuse while allowing legitimate partners to work without excessive friction.

Use signals to prioritize investigation

Useful review signals can include a sharp change in order volume, unusually concentrated code use, repeated cancellations, or a high return rate for a narrow product group. Compare each pattern with the context: a popular post, a restock, a site promotion, or confusing product content may explain it. A single shared address or a short visit is not conclusive evidence of deliberate abuse.

Investigate a small set of order references and relevant placements rather than collecting as much customer data as possible. Check whether the activity falls outside your stated policy and whether the attribution or discount setup could explain the result. Keep the observation, possible explanations, and confirmed facts separate in your notes. This reduces the chance of treating an initial suspicion as an established finding.

Resolve cases consistently and improve the offer

Follow the review procedure your program communicates. If an amount remains pending during investigation, record why, identify the next step, and provide an appropriate route for the partner to respond. Apply decisions consistently across similar cases and retain enough evidence to explain them. Avoid silently changing historical commission rules because a campaign became more expensive than expected.

Look for a configuration or communication fix after the case closes. An overly broad discount, a confusing self-purchase rule, or an outdated product claim can create recurring problems. Retest affected code and commission behavior after changes. Afivio’s partner and commission records can support this review, but this guide does not imply automatic fraud detection or a guarantee against abuse.

Worked example · illustrative scenario

Example: unusual orders with an ordinary explanation

A fictional fitness-accessory store sees a creator’s code orders increase sharply over a weekend. Before withholding approved rewards, the owner checks recent placements and finds a well-attended live product demonstration. The review still checks eligibility and returns, but the volume spike alone is not treated as proof of misconduct.

Frequently asked questions

Does a high return rate prove affiliate fraud?

No. Product fit, sizing guidance, promotion timing, and customer expectations can affect returns. Review comparable order cohorts and supporting evidence before deciding what happened.

Should I block every coupon-sharing site?

Define allowed distribution methods for your own program and ensure they are practical to enforce. Investigate the source and partner involvement before applying a policy decision.

Can this assessment detect fraudulent activity?

No. It suggests review steps based on your answers and does not inspect store data. Evidence gathering and decisions remain part of your merchant review process.
