How to start a Shopify affiliate program

Build your first Shopify affiliate program around a product you can explain, a commission you can afford, and partners who already reach the right customers. Use this guide to move from an idea to a controlled pilot with a clear decision at the end.

Define an offer a partner can explain

Start with the customer decision your partner can help with. A kitchenware store might focus on choosing a first chef’s knife, while a stationery store might help remote teams choose meeting notebooks. One product collection and a specific use case make it easier to build a convincing brief than an invitation to promote the entire catalog.

Work backward from an ordinary order. Deduct product cost, your shipping contribution, payment costs, the customer discount, and the proposed commission before deciding whether the offer works. Keep fixed program expenses separate so you can see both order economics and monthly economics. Choose a pilot budget that remains acceptable even if no incremental orders arrive.

Connect the workflow and test an order

Choose an affiliate management setup that supports your required partner and commission workflow. Afivio brings campaign management, partner links and codes, commission records, and performance reporting into one place. Install through the Shopify integration path and review the actual campaign settings before publishing an offer. A tool subscription does not replace recruiting or a useful partner brief.

Run a documented test with a dedicated test partner. Follow the link to the intended product, complete an appropriate test order, and compare the order reference with the affiliate record. Then test code use, a discount combination, and a refund scenario supported by your setup. Keep test activity separate from customer performance so your first review starts with reliable numbers.

Recruit a pilot and decide what success means

Invite people whose work naturally includes your product category: existing customers with relevant content, specialist educators, or creators you already know. Explain the product, the commercial arrangement, what help they receive, and how they can decline. Send a short welcome pack only after interest is confirmed. Avoid making publishing promises on their behalf or treating an accepted invitation as an active partnership.

At the review date, separate invited partners, joined partners, partners who published, and partners with qualifying orders. Review approved contribution alongside revenue and ask inactive partners what blocked them. Fix one clear problem, such as an unsuitable landing page or confusing instructions, before broadening recruitment. A pilot is useful even when it reveals that the offer needs revision.

Worked example · illustrative scenario

Example: a focused kitchenware pilot

A fictional kitchenware merchant starts with its beginner knife collection and invites four cooking educators. The merchant supplies a comparison guide, checks one link per partner, and schedules a review after the initial content has had time to reach readers. No sales target is presented as a guaranteed outcome.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a large creator audience to start?

No. A small group with relevant audiences can help you test your offer and operations. Audience fit, product understanding, and willingness to participate matter more than collecting many inactive profiles.

What should I configure before inviting partners?

Prepare the commission basis, qualifying-order rules, tracking setup, return treatment, payout process, and support contact. Test the actual customer journey before asking partners to publish.

Does installing Afivio bring affiliates automatically?

Treat recruitment as merchant work. Start with your own suitable contacts and use Afivio to organize the campaign, partner activity, and commission workflow.
