How to recruit affiliates for your Shopify store

Recruiting affiliates starts with identifying people who can help the right customer make a purchase decision. Build a small, reasoned candidate list, offer useful context, and track progress beyond accepted invitations. This guide focuses on direct recruitment you can manage yourself.

Research the buying context, not just follower count

Identify where potential customers ask questions before buying your category. For a hiking accessory store, that may be route guides, packing tutorials, or newsletters about weekend trips. Look for creators who already answer those questions with useful detail. A relevant content archive gives you a clearer reason to reach out than a general lifestyle profile with a large audience.

Capture a few decision fields for each candidate: a specific relevant post, audience location when available, product fit, contact method, and any existing relationship. Distinguish observed evidence from guesses. Public engagement can suggest interest, but it does not establish purchasing power or sales performance. You can ask about audience fit later without requesting unnecessary personal information.

Make the invitation easy to evaluate

Explain why you chose that person, what product you think would fit their audience, and how the commercial arrangement works. State whether you offer commission only, product access, or a separate content fee. Do not imply a guaranteed income or a paid brief when the arrangement is purely performance based. Give the recipient enough information to decline without scheduling a call.

Keep the initial action small: ask whether they want the product overview and program details. Once they respond, send the relevant terms, a realistic content suggestion, and a support contact. If they ask for a flat fee, evaluate that as a separate expense in your pilot economics. An affiliate commission and a content production fee reward different work.

Measure recruitment through useful activity

Track candidates contacted, replies, qualified conversations, joined partners, and first published placements. These stages reveal different problems. Low replies may signal a weak fit or unclear invitation; many joins with little publication may signal confusing onboarding. Keep the sample size visible. A few unanswered messages are not enough to conclude that an entire creator category will never work.

After the first placements, compare the customer questions and traffic quality they produce. Ask partners what information would make their explanation stronger. Keep a respectful record of declines and stop contacting people who do not want the offer. Use Afivio for the campaign and partner workflow while treating candidate research and relationship building as ongoing merchant responsibilities.

Worked example · illustrative scenario

Example: recruiting for a specialist product

A fictional outdoor store selling compact repair kits researches creators who publish trail repair tutorials. Its candidate notes cite the exact tutorial and a missing demonstration the kit could support. The first invitation offers product information and clear commission terms, rather than requesting an enthusiastic endorsement from someone who has never used the kit.

Frequently asked questions

Should I recruit customers or professional creators?

Start where you can establish product and audience fit. Customers may know the product well; professional creators may need separate compensation for production work. Either group still needs clear terms.

How many affiliates should I invite first?

Choose a group small enough to support personally and review carefully. Your available time and the complexity of the product are better starting points than an arbitrary recruitment target.

What if an affiliate joins but never posts?

Ask whether product access, unclear instructions, timing, or offer fit is the blocker. A joined account is an onboarding milestone, not proof of an active promotional relationship.
