How this estimate works: Use your own store data before making a commercial decision. All monetary amounts are USD.
Combine percentages in the right order
A 10% shopper discount and a 10% affiliate commission do not take exactly 20% of the original price in this model. The discount happens first, leaving 90% of the original revenue; commission then takes 10% of that smaller amount. Together they consume 19% of the original order value. This sequencing matters when comparing a coupon-based offer with a commission-only partnership.
Your real program might use a different commission base. Confirm the written terms and configuration before relying on the result. Keep shipping, tax, and excluded products outside the merchandise input when they do not qualify. The tool models one percentage discount, so it cannot determine whether a combination of automatic promotions, fixed reductions, or other checkout rules applies to an actual Shopify basket.
Protect the contribution available from the product
Product cost does not shrink simply because the shopper receives a coupon. Enter the product and fulfillment cost directly so the calculator can keep that cost unchanged while showing the remaining contribution. A deeply discounted low-margin item may leave little room for an affiliate payout even when the same offer works for a higher-margin accessory. Test the products creators are actually expected to promote.
Do not treat positive contribution as proof that the offer is profitable after fulfillment. Include product and fulfillment expenses in the cost input. Transaction fees, returns, support, and any other expenses you have not included remain outside this simple comparison. Set an internal contribution requirement that leaves room for those costs. For a period-wide contribution view, move the selected offer into the profit calculator; use break-even planning to account for fixed program expenses.
Give the coupon a specific commercial purpose
Decide why the customer needs the discount: encouraging a first purchase, supporting a launch, or making a particular bundle attractive are different objectives. Then evaluate an offer against that objective. A larger discount that mainly reaches existing buyers may reduce contribution without creating enough additional demand. Track eligible orders, customer mix, and coupon distribution rather than evaluating the campaign solely on redemption volume.
Keep the offer understandable for the creator and shopper. Specify eligible products, dates, and any limits in the campaign instructions, and test a realistic basket before sharing the code. If a creator needs a new offer, compare the economics before approving it. A clear exception process is easier to reconcile than a collection of undocumented discounts negotiated independently with every partner.
Worked example · illustrative scenario
Worked example: two percentages, one basket
An illustrative 120 basket has 60 in product and fulfillment costs. A 15% discount costs 18 and leaves 102 of revenue. A 10% commission costs 10.20, leaving 31.80 before other expenses. Discount plus commission therefore costs 28.20, or 23.5% of the original basket, rather than 25%.
Frequently asked questions
Does this tool configure a Shopify discount?
No. It is a planning worksheet. Configure and test the actual offer in your store and affiliate workflow after deciding which economics and eligibility rules you want.
Can discounts and commissions use different bases?
Yes, if your program defines them that way. This worksheet specifically applies commission after the entered customer discount. Reconcile any different setup separately.
Should every creator receive a coupon?
Only when a coupon serves the campaign. Some partnerships may use a link without a shopper discount. Compare both scenarios and consider how you will track and communicate the offer.
